From Repetitive Tasks to Intelligent Agents: SS&C Blue Prism Accelerates the Shift to Agentic Automation

The evolution of enterprise automation is moving beyond rigid, rule-based Robotic Process Automation (RPA) towards sophisticated agentic AI, a shift many organizations perceive as challenging. SS&C Blue Prism is actively supporting its clientele in navigating this progression at a comfortable pace, ensuring a smooth transition to more advanced capabilities.

The Imperative for Advanced Automation

This transformation is becoming increasingly imperative. Steven Colquitt, Vice President of Software Engineering at SS&C Blue Prism, highlights that contemporary operational workflows have reached a level of intricacy that exceeds the design parameters of conventional RPA. He notes that diverse, unstructured data streams mimic unpredictable real-world interactions, where inputs fluctuate, outcomes vary, and decisions demand real-time contextual understanding.

Illustrating this distinction, Brian Halpin, an executive in automation at SS&C Blue Prism, references a credit agreement scenario requiring numerous “answers” rather than simple data points. He emphasizes that “answers” better reflect the sophisticated reasoning capabilities inherent in large language models (LLMs) compared to basic data extraction.

Defining Agentic AI: Outcome-Driven Operations

The concept of this evolution as an ongoing journey remains central. Halpin explains that with agentic AI, an organization specifies a desired outcome to the AI agent, allowing the agent to determine the necessary steps itself. Instead of providing a rigid, sequential instruction set, the approach focuses on high-level objectives like “review this loan” or “onboard this customer.”

Despite the promising potential, the market’s complete readiness for fully autonomous, agentic workflows driven by non-deterministic logic is still developing. Halpin points to significant hurdles, including building trust, adhering to regulatory requirements, ensuring robust auditability, maintaining stability and security, and addressing known issues such as LLM hallucinations and model drift. Significant learning and development are still necessary before companies embrace fully autonomous operations driven by such advanced frameworks.

Bridging the Gap: SS&C Blue Prism's Strategy

SS&C Blue Prism currently serves thousands of customers utilizing automated processes, ranging from established Centers of Excellence to fully deployed digital workforces. The company aims to guide these existing users into the more advanced realm of AI. Often, this involves bridging the gap between disparate departmental initiatives, as AI development frequently operates in isolation from core process automation teams. The goal is to integrate AI capabilities into existing process efficiency efforts, unlocking further automation potential, potentially an additional 20-30% of end-to-end process coverage.

To support this expansion, SS&C Blue Prism is preparing to unveil new technology. This upcoming solution will empower organizations to construct, embed, and orchestrate AI agents directly within their existing workflows. Attendees of the Intelligent Automation conference at TechEx Global received early insights into these advancements and the company’s strategic direction.

Pioneering by Example

SS&C Technologies, the parent company, itself serves as a prominent example of large-scale RPA adoption, deploying over 3,500 digital workers globally and realizing hundreds of millions in operational cost reductions. The company also has approximately 35 AI agents actively integrated with these digital workers to manage intricate assignments, demonstrating a practical application of the journey it advocates for its customers.
